Budget in pictures

Create, edit, delete and follow your budget: a month, a year, a trip. Short sentences, diagrams, and an FAQ at the end.

The idea in 30 seconds

A budget is a list of categories, each with a planned amount.

You only fill in the ones you care about. Muskadia adds everything up by itself: the total, and for Home the planned balance (planned income minus planned expenses).

A Home budget renews every month: you don't have to start over. You only change it when your situation changes.

A budget is the sum of its categories Groceries 400 euros, Leisure 100 euros and Housing 700 euros make a total of 1,200 euros. Groceries€400 Leisure€100 Housing€700 Muskadia adds up Budget of the month €1,200
You never type the total: it is calculated from the categories.

Create the budget for one month

For Home. (A trip's budget has its own section further down.)

  1. Open Home, then the Budget tab.
  2. Tap Plan a month for the next month, or Edit budget for the current month.
  3. Fill in the amount of each category, first for planned expenses, then for planned income.
  4. Tap Save, then choose from when the change applies (see “Edit”).

Create the budget for the whole year

The simplest method: prepare one “typical” month by category, then let it repeat. After that, adjust only the months that are out of the ordinary.

  1. In Home > Budget, Year view, tap Plan my year.
  2. Tap the Build it by category card. It opens the current month, or January for another year.
  3. Fill in your categories, then Save and choose This month and all following months. Every following month takes this budget.
  4. For a month that stands apart (August, December…), tap its name in the grid: it opens by category. Save with This month only.
Building the year in three steps A typical month saved for all following months, then an adjustment for December alone. 1. A typical month, repeated OctNovDecJanFeb… Every month from November on takes thesame budget. 2. December costs more OctNovDecJanFeb… “This month only”: only Decemberchanges; January goes back to the normalbudget.
Orange: the normal budget. Red: a different month. Grey: a past month, which does not change.

Below the card, the “Or one total per month” grid also lets you enter a simple total for each month, without going through the categories. The ⌄ arrow to the right of a month copies its amounts to the following months.

Edit a budget

Open the month you want and change the amounts. When you save, Muskadia asks from when the change applies:

This month only

The next month keeps its earlier amounts.

Example: a November that costs more than usual.

This month and all following months

Every following month takes these amounts, even those you had already set.

Example: your rent goes up for good.

This month only, or all following months With this month only, just November changes. With all following months, November and every month after it change. This month only OctNovDecJanFeb… Only November changes; the following months keeptheir earlier amounts. This month and all following months OctNovDecJanFeb… November and every month after it take the newamounts.Red: what changes. Grey: the past month, nevertouched.
A past month is never touched unless you edit it yourself.

Delete a budget

Remove a category

Empty its amount, then save and choose the scope.

Stop a month's budget (Home)

Empty all the categories on one side (expenses, or income). There is then no budget (or planned income) from that month on. The earlier months keep theirs.

Delete a trip's budget

Trip > Budget > Delete budget, then confirm.

Your expenses are never deleted. Only the budget, meaning what you had planned, disappears.

Break a category down into subcategories

To see where a category's money goes: “Subscriptions” into Free, Cloud, ChatGPT…

  1. In Settings > Categories, open the category, then tap Subcategories and add your own.
  2. In the budget, the category carries an asterisk *. Tap it: one line per subcategory, plus No detail.
A category's amount is the sum of its lines Subscriptions 25 euros equals Free 15 plus Cloud 5 plus No detail 5. Subscriptions *€25 Free€15 Cloud€5 No detail€5 15 + 5 + 5 = €25 “No detail” keeps the part you don't break down.
Subcategories are sorted alphabetically, and the name you type is not translated.

Follow your budget

Your budget is a reference point: Muskadia compares what you planned with what you actually spent.

Reading a line of the Month detail Groceries: 450 euros spent out of 400 planned, full bar, over by 50 euros. Leisure: 60 euros out of 100, 60 percent used. Groceries€450 / €400 Over by €50.00 Leisure€60 / €100 60% used · €40.00 left
€450 / €400 reads “spent / planned”. The bar fills up, then turns red beyond the budget. Green: you are within your budget. Income reads “received / planned”.

A trip's budget

Same principle, but simpler: a single budget for the whole trip, with no months.

  1. Open the trip, Budget tab, then Set a budget (or Edit budget).
  2. Enter the planned amount for each category. The total is shown, with the amount per day if the trip has dates.
  3. Choose whether you want the alerts, then Save budget.

The Budget tab then shows, for the total and for each category, the percentage used, what is left or the overspend. The budget is calculated in the trip's display currency.

Frequently asked questions

How do I follow my budget?

For Home: Budget tab > Year view to see each month, then tap a month for its detail (actual against planned, category by category). For a trip: the trip's Budget tab. Statistics shows how your expenses are split.

Do I have to fill in every category?

No. Fill in only the ones you care about. A category with no amount simply has no budget.

What is “No detail” for?

It is the part of a category that you don't break down into subcategories. For example, Subscriptions €25 including Free €15: the remaining €10 are “No detail”. In expense lists, it is also the expenses entered without a subcategory.

Why did my total go up when I filled in a subcategory?

Because a category's amount is the sum of its lines. If your budget already existed, its amount sits entirely in “No detail”. To split it without changing the total, lower “No detail” by as much as you add to the subcategories.

What does the asterisk (*) mean?

The category has subcategories. Tap it to unfold it.

What does “Planned, no breakdown” mean?

It is the part of an old budget entered before categories existed: it counts in the total but is not attached to any category. You can split it by opening the month with “Plan this month”.

What is the difference between “this month only” and “all following months”?

“This month only” changes just the open month: the next one keeps its amounts. “All following months” changes this month and every month after it, even those already set. Past months never move.

What happens when I go over my budget?

Nothing is blocked: you can keep entering expenses. The bar turns red, the line says “Over by…”, and if alerts are on, a notification warned you at 80% and then 100%.

How do alerts work?

A notification at 80% and then 100% of the budget, for the total and for each category, once per threshold. They are created on your phone, nothing goes through the internet. If you refuse notifications, the tracking stays visible in the app. You set the alerts at the bottom of the budget screen.

I made a mistake: how do I undo it?

Reopen the month, put the right amounts back and save. To get the earlier budget back on every month, choose “This month and all following months”. Your expenses are never touched.

Can my budget be in several currencies?

A budget is in a single currency: the display currency of Home or of the trip. A foreign-currency expense is converted at the rate of the day you entered it, then counted in the budget.

How do I keep my budget if I change phone?

In Settings > Export, create a backup: it also contains your budgets and subcategories. Restore it on the new phone.

Does income count in my expenses?

Never. Income (salary, benefits, refunds) only feeds the balance: income minus expenses.
